After studying Communications Engineering at the University of Cooperative Education in Stuttgart (Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University) between 1988 and 1991, Dr. Uwe Handmann graduated as Dipl.-Ing.(BA). Afterwards, Dr. Uwe Handmann studied at the Ruhr University in Bochum from 1991 to 1995 Electrical Engineering (graduation Dipl.-Ing). In the following time he had research stays at the Fraunhofer Institute IIS-A in Erlangen, at the Institute of Communication Acoustics, Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the Leiden University in the Netherlands. From 1995 to 2001 Dr. Handmann was employed at the Chair of Theoretical Biology at the Institute of Neuroinformatics of the Ruhr-University Bochum. He worked as a researcher focusing on Computational Neuroscience, Image- and Video Processing, Driver Assistance Systems and Sensor Data Fusion. Between 1998 and 2001, he headed the research group 'Image Processing'. Dr. Handmann finished his Phd in 2000 at the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Ruhr University Bochum (Dr.-Ing.). Between 2000 and 2008 Dr. Handmann was a Group Leader and Lead Architect in the field of Biometric Systems at L-1 Identity Solutions AG (formerly ZN Vision Technologies AG). During this period he initiated a large number of projects in research and prototype development. Several prototypes were converted into products and marketed accordingly. In 2008 he was appointed to a professorship at the University of Applied Sciences of South Westfalia, where he headed the laboratory of Computer Science, Image Processing and Media Technology. In 2010, Dr. Handmann received a professorship at the Hochschule Ruhr West - University of Applied Sciences. At the Bottrop Campus he is heading the Computer Science Institute. He holds the Chair in Computational Neuroscience. Since 2012 he is also heading the zdi-center mint4u (zdi - 'Future through Innovation') of the Hochschule Ruhr West. In 2013 Dr. Handmann was a visiting professor at the University of Science and Technology in Qingdao, China. In addition, Dr. Handmann is Dean of the Department 1 at the Ruhr West University. In 2016 he was a founding member of the Section for Digitization of the Graduate Institute NRW, which he still belongs today. Dr. Handmann was a founding member of the Institute of Positive Computing (Hochschule Ruhr West) in 2016. In 2017 he was a founding member of the Section for Media and Communication of the Graduate Institute NRW. He was selected to be a member of the advisory board of 'Umbau 21' in Northrhine Westfalia in 2017 and to be a member of the strategic circle of ZdI in Northrhine Westfalia in 2018. In 2018 Dr. Handmann was a founding member and is CEO of the Prosperkolleg e.V.. In addition Dr. Handmann became the Scientific Director of the zdi-center Oberhausen in 2018.
